Another paper from the ERU-EADP writing week 2021 has been published and can be read it in the British Journal of Developmental psychology via this link.
What did you find in this paper?
This registered report highlighted that fair and supportive relationships with teachers contributed to decreases in sense of academic futility at the individual (but not at the classroom) level for both adolescents with and without an immigrant background. Sense of class belonging did not mediate these associations.
How did you experience the writing week?
The OSWW 2021 was a great collaborative and learning experience because everyone brought their own research interests and expertise to the table and we worked together to address important research gaps. We learned with and from each other and closely collaborated to see our registered report published.

Kiusaamisväkivalta: Ymmärrä kiusaamisilmiö ja puutu oikein
Bullying as a form of violence: Understand the phenomenon and intervene properly
Christina Salmivalli
What is the mission of this book?
The book summarizes research on bullying and its evidence-based prevention and intervention, with an emphasis on research contributions of the past decade.
Why is it important to highlight this book?
The book discusses how the understanding of bullying has changed across time, includes topics such as digital bullying, bias-based bullying, sibling bullying, teachers bullying students, between-country differences in bullying, the healthy context paradox, and the debate around the definition of bullying. Furthermore, it summarizes what is known (and what is not yet known) about effective prevention and intervention.

This paper emerged from the ERU-EADP writing week in 2023 and can be read it in the International Journal of Transgender Health via this link.
What did you find in this paper?
This paper explores how nonbinary children (5-8 years old) actively shape their identities, demonstrating agency within a cisnormative society. Their narratives challenge traditional gender norms and affirm their role as active participants in defining their own identities.
How did you experience the writing week?
The OSWW was an incredible opportunity to come together as a team, not just to align on our work but to truly connect with one another. The intensity of those writing days created a space where we could deeply engage with the topic and with each other, building a foundation of trust and shared purpose.

The next paper of the ERU-EADP writing week 2021 edition is published and can be read in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence!
What did you find in this paper?
This paper showed the differential interplay between identity commitments and school value for ethnic minority and ethnic majority adolescents. Specifically, stronger identity commitments related to lower school value among minority adolescents, but were unrelated among majority adolescents over time. Additionally, higher school value increased identity commitments among minority youth, yet it decreased identity commitments among majority youth over time.
How did you experience the writing week?
The experience to work with and learn from other junior scholars was invaluable. It helped to gain new collaboration skills and academic independence from our PhD supervisors. Although the publication process turned out challenging, it was so rewarding to have this paper published and see our names together in print - and to celebrate this publication together during the next conference.

Why is it important to highlight this book?
We believe that a strength-based approach is highly needed in schools and that a positive youth development perspective has a transformative power in educational system when applied.

We are already working hard behind the scenes for our biennial conference next year! The conference will take place at the Radisson Blu hotel in Vilnius, Lithuania from August 25th - 29th. The call for submissions will be out soon, so stay tuned!
The ERU-EADP open science writing week 2025 will take place from March 31st to April 4th in Porto, Portugal. There will be 6 topics & mentors in developmental science involved and there will be place for 18 early career researchers. More updates will follow in October!
Another paper of the ERU-EADP writing week 2021 edition is published! You can read the full paper in Emerging Adulthood via this link. Congratulations!
What did you find in this paper?
This preregistered study found no associations between overt discrimination and psychological well-being, but participants experiencing more subtle discrimination during their transition to college reported more depressive symptoms after four months. Ethnic-racial identity did not explain the relation between discrimination and psychological well-being or influence the strength of the relation.
How did you experience the writing week?
Highlights: Collaborating with an international team independent from their supervisors is a precious experience for a Ph.D. student. Thus, it was very informative and enriching working together with other early career researchers with different interests and theoretical backgrounds and learning from a senior researcher, whose work we highly value, who guided us both in the content and methodology of the paper. Also, despite OSWW 2021 being held online, we quickly created a team spirit through ERU's support and structure during this process. Most importantly, it was also great fun!
Challenges: For some members of the group, it was a bit of a challenge to figure out their role in the project because it was the first time they were involved in a project where the expected contributions were not already clear from the start (e.g., who leads the paper, who contributes in what way).

Education for Sustainable Development: from the cosmopolitan project to cyber coexistence
Rosario Ortega Ruiz
What is this paper about?
The paper underlines the importance of social, emotional and moral education. Including morality as a construct that has to be taken into account in all its complexity especially to understand social processes as bullying and cyberbullying.
Why is it important to you to highlight this paper?
The article presents a reflection on the role of education to face the Sustainable Development Goals suggested by the 2030 Agenda, and underlines the new challenges of education and society to promote not only convivencia but also cyberconvivencia among children and teens.

One of the ERU-EADP writing week papers of the 2021 edition is published in the Journal of International Migration and Integration. You can read the full paper via this link. Congratulations to this author team!
What did you find in this paper?
This study revealed that migrant and non-migrant families at psychosocial risk face similar needs in terms of parenting competences, but it also highlighted their differences in this regard. This study is a step forward in our understanding of what needs to be different and what can be common when supporting parenting competences of migrant and non-migrant families at psychosocial risk, informing how to tailor parenting interventions and improve their suitability to these target populations, with the ultimate goal of improving positive parenting practices and children's well-being.
How did you experience the writing week?
Participating in the ERU-EADP open science writing week was an excellent opportunity to develop international networking in a stimulating environment, acquire and share new knowledge with senior and young scholars, and work together on a scientific paper with secondary data that contributed to expanding our work in the field of developmental psychology.

Çocuk ve Ergenlerde İnternet ve Sosyal Medya Kullanımı
Internet and Social Media Use in Children and Adolescents
Ilknur Coban
What is this book chapter about?
This book chapter includes a detailed review of social media and internet behavior of children and adolescents, including positive and negative outcomes, prevalence of addiction and compulsive internet use, findings of studies conducted in Türkiye, and suggestions for healthy behaviors online.
Why is it important to you to highlight this book chapter?
There is a shortage of academic sources focusing on social media use of children in depth, hence, this specific chapter is designed to be used in lectures and review papers relevant to online behavior. It is important to learn national studies and findings, in addition to international ones.
